The Torah portion for this week, “Shoftim,” begins with the famous words “Justice, justice shall you pursue…”

One of the greatest injustices of our time is the proliferation of guns in our society.  After Rabbi Steve presents a Jewish view of how guns are destroying our society, Connie Owens will discuss the “Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence.”  The mission of the Brady organization is to create a safer America by cutting gun deaths in half by 2025 by keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

Connie is a member of our sister congregation, Northaven United Methodist Church.  She grew up in Fort Worth and has lived in Dallas for 37 years.

In 2014 Reverend Eric Folkerth had a series of sermons titled - "Follow Your Heartbreak" - and those sermons stayed with her.  After the police deaths of our police officers here in Dallas on July 7, she decided she had to do more to help our community.

Connie says ”I was moved to action by what happened in Dallas - my home.  The gun culture in this state is frightening - and the ONLY way we can change this state is by taking a stand.  I want the Brady Campaign to become an integral and essential part of our community.”
