Installing Zoom

If you haven't used Zoom before, you will need to install the Zoom app. The procedure for doing this varies depending on the platform you're using.

Desktop Computer

If you received a link to join a meeting, click on it.  This should take you to a web page that displays one or more of the following options:

  • A prompt to "open zoom.us" or "launch the meeting" – this is only applicable if you already have Zoom installed.  If you do have Zoom, respond to the prompt to join the meeting.
  • A prompt to "download and run Zoom" – select this to download the Zoom installer.  You may need to manually run the installer. You may also need to answer additional prompts to configure the Zoom app.
  • A prompt to "join from your browser" – this requires a browser plug-in.  Plug-ins can be finicky, so use an app if you can.

If you didn't receive a link to join a meeting, go to the Zoom Download Center, scroll down to "Zoom Client for Meetings" and click the download button.

Mobile Device (Smart phone or tablet)

If you received a link to join a meeting, using your mobile device, click on the link.  If you already have Zoom installed, it should attempt to launch the Zoom app (you may see a prompt asking for permission to do this).

If the Zoom app isn't installed, you may see an error message indicating that the link isn't valid – the error is because the link is trying to reference the Zoom app, which isn't installed yet.  Dismiss the error message.  Despite the error message, you may see an option to install the Zoom app; if so, install the app.

You can also go to the Zoom Download Center, and scroll down to "Zoom Mobile Apps".  If you're using an iPad or iPhone, click the button "Download in App Store".  For android devices, click "Download in Google Play".

Joining a Meeting With the Zoom App

You do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting that someone else organized, so you can ignore the "Sign in" and "Sign up" options in the Zoom app.

To join a meeting, use the link that the organizer provided.  If you don't have a link, join using the Meeting ID and password that the organizer provided.

Phoning In to a Meeting

If you are unable to use a Zoom app, the organizer may have provided a phone number to call in to the meeting.  You may want to dial in if your computer doesn't have a microphone or speakers, or you don't have Internet access.
